Tracking rental equipment for occasional use

Rather than investing in add-ons or third party software for QuickBooks to track equipment rented out – particularly if you’re not in the rental equipment business and don’t have tons and tons of tracked items – here’s an easy work-around; use timesheets instead.

  1. Set up a non-inventory item for each piece of equipment
  2. Assign an “Other Name” to each piece of equipment to be tracked
  3. Use timesheets to enter the dates and times the equipment is rented out

Optional bonus – you can mark the time entries as billable, then create an invoice to the customer for the billable expenses.
